本剧改编自作家、科学编辑兼广告撰稿人邦妮·加默斯的同名小说。故事发生在1950年代早期，当时的社会普遍认为女性属于家庭而非职业领域。ElizabethZott（布丽·拉尔森BrieLarson饰）渴望在一个由男性主导的世界里成为一名科学家。她就职于一家实验室，是知名科学家CalvinEvans（刘易斯·普尔曼LewisPullman饰）的助手，两人之间有着非同寻常的化学反应。然而，随着Elizabeth发现自己怀有身孕、孤身一人，还被实验室开除，她搁置了自己的梦想，同时也被激发出了单身母亲独有的聪明才智。Elizabeth接受了一份在电视烹饪节目当主持人的工作，并开始教导一个国家被忽视的家庭主妇们和那些突然用心倾听的男性很多食谱之外的知识，也一直渴望着回到自己真正喜爱的领域：科学。
